Did you know that street “coated” ice cream was invented in Turin in 1935? In those years the ice cream was still considered an exotic bold enterprise, as it was very difficult to keep the product at low temperatures. It was called “Pinguino” (Penguin) because the only flavours were cream-vanilla and it was coated with bitter chocolate. Still now, despite its several imitations, the one and only can be found at “Vera gelateria artigiana” (Real homemade ice-cream parlour) Pepino in Piazza Carignano, in the heart of the old and elegant town centre.
